artist studies

An artwork which is based upon Izzy Medrano's concept art in God of War 3. Basically studying how he works and analyzing his thought process just by observing his artwork. Amazing artist. Just google him up to check out his art. Didnt wana spend so much time on this one thats why its not so detailed. My aim was to get the mood and feel there, not much of a finished illustration definitely. Cheers

lady portrait

Another practise from one of Stephen Schirle's artwork studying his color choices, strokes and so on because theres just something about his artworks that appeals to me, the highly saturated color of the skin, the emotive expression of the figure, the strokes and blend of saturated colors is just oozing out delight! I just had to do a study!

Been trying to improve my flaw which is, i always tend to rush through my artwork be it a sketch or painting without paying attention to correct form, expression, mood, and shape.

I wouldnt say that i spend such a long time on THIS piece but i did try to look at the picture as a whole most of the time rather than focusing on one particular area. Focused more on the face getting it right...... Still doesnt look right... Just a tiny bit off here and there~ but a good attempt i say~

I Gots Nothing Better To Do

Well, these past few days flew by quite fast and i find myself at a position where i need to utilize and maximize any opportunities that come in my way. As for work its been quite fun, drawing stuff, concept art. Cant complain there, great colleagues, great company, good management.. been gaining new knowledge and i hope to gain more as i go along within this company.

Just a blog highlight The Real John Woo , thought id share. Apparently this guru is one of the many notable lecturers at CDA (Concept Design Academy) and has kickass concept design works.

Have a nice day! :)

My first proper Z Brush attempt

This is my first ever Z brush sketch that i took the furthest ever!! I would usually run out of patience since im still kinda new with Z Brush and still learning about the software.

Modeled the rough base mesh in maya and sculpted everything else in Z Brush. Spent most of the time getting the form and shapes correct..Form is key. Referenced from a tutorial by Wayne Robson check his website, dashdotslash.net

Im a sketch artist and a modeler

So the past few days ive begun my work at Monstrou Studio. My official post is an animator and 3D modeler but somehow im assisting the art department to do concept art for our pre production. So far im doing orthographic views or what the animation world would call 'Model Packets' for the characters of my company's animated series. Only modeled a few props here and there.

Recently stumbled upon this video online and it was just too packed with awesomeness and inspiration that it kept my concept art dreams alive and burning again eventhough its hard to make it as a concept artist here in Msia.. Check it out Six More Vodka . Great artists like Andrew Jones, Coro, jason Chan, Black frog and many more are featured in this video its just too awesome!! i must say!

Heres a mediocre sketch of a random muscular dude.. Will come up with more.. I have to!

Beloved animation lecturer on spotlight :)

Our beloved animation lecturer Hooi Ling from The One Academy was featured in Tech Central on the major success on Toy Story 3 and gave a little insight on the upcoming talk by PIXAR happening at Bukit jalil, Malaysia from the 10th till the 12th of august. Happy reading :) Go Hooi Ling!! :D

Character animation is vital to the animation process and is what contributed to the charm of Toy Story 3, said Lee Hooi Ling, animation lecturer from The One Academy of Communication and Design.
"An animator breathes life into the characters and helps make them seem more real ... and more human-like," she said.
"This helps endear the characters to the audience, which can mean the difference between success or failure for an animated movie."

Toy Story 3 is the second highest grossing film of 2010 worldwide and raked in a total of about US$734mil (RM2.4bil).
Some of these techniques will be taught to local animators attending the Pixar Toy Story 3 Lecture Series this month. Nine international animation specialists from Pixar Animation Studios will be giving tips and pointers, as well as sharing their experiences.

Among them will be Allison Rutland, who will be teaching character animation skills. She animated characters for Toy Story 3, The Chronicle of Narnia: Prince Caspian and The Tale of Desperaux.
Another important topic is scene optimisation, which comprises the building and dressing of sets for animated films. Amy Allen, who constructed the 3D sets for Toy Story 3, will be enlightening participants on this complex subject.
According to Lee, dressing the sets correctly helps create the whole atmosphere of an animated movie. "A lot of thought and detail has to be put into these backgrounds, especially in a 3D production," said.
Lots to learn

She said these are just two of the many important areas in animation that will be the focus of the lecture series. "The series will cover the entire animation process," she added.

The series is being billed as a must for animators here because they will be learning from some of the world's best animators.
"They will get a better idea of what skills are needed to create a world-class production," Lee said.
"Animation in Malaysia is still relatively new. It is only about 10 years old, where as in the United States, animation dates back to the Walt Disney cartoons of the late 20s."

The lecture series comprises a two-day 3D animation masterclass for professionals and a separate day-long animation seminar for college and university students.

A masterclass will be conducted on Aug 10 and 11, from 9am to 6.30pm, at the Technology Park Malaysia in Bukit Jalil. A seat will cost Malaysians RM350 each, but foreign participants will be charged US$350 (RM1,125) each.
The seminar for students will be held on Aug 12 at the same venue. It is priced at RM50 a seat for Malaysians and US$50 (RM160) for international participants.

Three quarters of the tickets for both events are already sold out, said The One Academy. If you want to reserve a seat, go online to www.toaevents.com/ masterclass, or call the academy at (03) 5637-5510. - STEVEN PATRICK

Skidadle!

Just two fast sillhouttes exercise before going out with family for breakfast! Their actually rushing me. gtg!!

Character Sketches

Just felt like doing some character sketches based on a certain type of environment and try to evoke a different type of persona to each character. The one on the left is basically the executioner of things and handles all the brutal executions with his chainsaw (which was not rendered out) whilst the middle character is sort of like the person who you would see guarding the door to the secret hideout hence he would be the door guard..
yes.. and the right is basically the deceiver (quote Jason Chan) the type of character who is the one holding the suprise at the end of the story. Shes dangerous and attractively attractive.. These were meant to be very rough but just cant help it!.. Well in a way its still rough for me~

Ponyo

Ponyo was interesting. Always nice and engaging to watch a Studio Ghibli Production led by the well known Hayao Miyazaki. Loved Ponyo's design and her expressions throughout the story, never fail to put a smile on my face lol! Some study sketches done in my sketchbook with blue color pencil and rendered with Photoshop. Cheers!

More Life Drawing

Decided to do some life drawings today. Kept yesterday's newspaper and did some drawings from the sports section. Well given that Malaysian newspaper write articles on soccer most of the time hence why there are a lot of soccer figures. Its fun to study the action lines of the figure in motion nevertheless and am planning to make this habit of drawing from newspapers more frequent. Nothing is better than drawing from life and newspapers have interesting images sometimes.

The last two pages which is filled with sexy female figures is based on a life drawing of another artist but am starting to get the hang of it and be more of an analytical artist instead of just copying what i see. Quite satisfied that im improving and slowly achieving that independance factor as an artist. Can't say that im satisfied at this point of course still a long way. Oh well better start sketching some more!

Study

Studies that i did from this month's Imagine FX Issue on Bobby Chiu and a greyscale study referenced from a 3D artwork by Jeff Miller. Overall i would say that i definitely learned a few things from these two studies. Learned the importance of steps in our painting process in order to make ourselves more consistent and faster, the percentage of greyscale tones in a picture although this requires more practise. Apart from that started to learn a thing or two about brush flow settings in photoshop which by the way i rarely use in my artwork and how to apply that knowledge in my sketches, paintings etc digitally of course.
